Feed the Monster Toss Game

Today’s Felt Fun Friday project is a really fun game that is pretty quick and easy to make.

Since I can’t draw to save my life, I found some monster clip art online that I thought was kinda cute. I adjusted the size and colors, and cut the various pieces out of colored felt (I used yarn for the antennas), then assembled it all on stiff black felt.

Then I took an empty cardboard box, taped it shut with packaging tape, traced and cut out a space for the monster’s mouth with a utility knife.

Then I spray painted the entire box black.

Once the box was dry I attached the felt monster to the box using sticky back Velcro strips. You could hot glue it to the box, but I wanted to make the felt monster removable in case the kids ruined the box, or I wanted to use it for another project. Little Miss Elliott (almost 2 years old) figured out the monster was detachable so she kept ripping him off! LOL So, in hindsight, I would probably go ahead and glue it on if doing this again. =)

I made the little bean bags about 4″ x 4″ so they work well for little hands. Simply cut squares from your felt, stitch around the sides (by hand or machine) and leave a little open space for a funnel.

Lentils were handy so I used those to fill the bags, but you could also use rice, feed corn, beans, etc.,

Then close up the opening.

We practiced tossing the bags into the mouth from different distances, and we would make funny “Nom, nom, nom!” sounds when the bags made it into his mouth. =) Not only is this a fun activity for the kids, but it helps develop gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

There are so many things you could do with this game…you could make the bean bags in different colors, make felt food pieces, feed the monster letters of the alphabet. Of course you could draw or find any number of different clip art pieces if you didn’t want to make a monster…lots of fun and educational opportunities with this project!

Think your kids would like such a game?
