For My {Easter} Peeps

April 18, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Felt Peeps for Easter Basket

I don’t know about you, but my kids get more than enough candy at holidays so I’m always looking for some fun alternatives that won’t rot their teeth. Today’s Felt Fun Friday project is another quick and easy project just in time for last minute Easter basket additions!

Felt Peeps for Easter Basket

Make a dozen of these little cuties to stick in baskets or hide around the house along with eggs and candy! I made mine single sided but you could make them double sided very easily by adding another colored piece of felt on the back side. =)

Here’s a free printable pattern:

Interchangeable Felt RainBOW Hair Clip Set

Felt Rainbow Hair Clip Set by Candyland Studio

Felt is a wonderful material for teaching tools, but it’s also a very fun medium for making your own fashion accessories, too! If you haven’t noticed from some of my other projects, I LOVE COLOR! This is one reason I love working with felt so very, very much…there is such a HUGE assortment of colors and patterns you can select from when working on your projects. Today’s Felt Fun Friday project is great for those who can’t decide on just one color. =)

Feeling a little blue today? How about pink? Maybe green? What little girl wouldn’t love a whole pile of these vibrantly colored rainBOW hair clips to mix and match with a favorite outfit, currently holiday, or mood?!

An interesting feature of these hair clips is that they are detachable and interchangeable. So you simply pull one off and attach another in no time at all!

Detachable Bow Backs

Plus, the clips are fully lined and have a no-slip grip so they work great if your kids are like mine and have really thin, or barely-there hair!

Conversation Heart Scented Rice Bag Handwarmer

Happy Valentine’s Day! Won’t you…

Scented Felt Heart Handwarmer Rice Bag by Candyland Studio

I hope you had a chance to check out the printable Valentines and felt sucker covers I posted awhile back in honor of today. Even if you didn’t use them this year, the sucker covers are fun any time!

Today’s Felt Fun Friday project can also be used year round. Plus there are lots of ways to personalize this felt item making it a wonderful gift idea. I had the idea for these when I made the little bags for the Monster Toss Game.

I started by cutting two red felt hearts, about 3″ wide. Then I cut out white iron-on letters. (If you have a Cricut or other cutting machine heat press vinyl would be wonderful…in hindsight I should’ve probably used that.)

Then I sewed around the edge leaving about a 1″ opening. Again, in hindsight since I’ll never win any awards for my sewing skills I probably should’ve sewed this inside out and turn back out to finish. LOL

All Mixed Up My Pink Heaven Scented Salts from YouBetterPosh.com

Next I filled the heart with rice and a little bit of my Perfectly Posh All Mixed Up scented salts. Maybe 1/2 teaspoon? (You know me, I don’t like patterns and I don’t like measuring!) You could also use scented herbs or lavender or lots of things, really. This is just what I had on hand and I was super excited to find another use for this product!

I finished the heart by stitching up the open area, which I conveniently cropped out of this photo because it was not super pretty. =) It makes a cute little gift for grandparents, teachers, etc. It smells really nice so they can leave it in a drawer, or pop it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds at a time to use it as a heat pack, or keep it in the freezer for a cold pack.

This project is very quick and easy, and you could do different shapes, sizes, colors, and you could personalize the bags for different holidays, or put a monogram on it if it’s a gift…SO many options!

A Perfect Gift for Anyone

Freezer Meals

Although I love giving gifts I struggle every year for birthdays and Christmas for a few certain people in my family that have every thing they need, and don’t really want anything. Gift cards are a useful standby gift, but not much fun to give. This year I had a great idea while attending a Wildtree Freezer Meal Workshop – FOOD. Everyone needs to eat, right?!

At first I ordered some of the spices and things, thinking I could give those away, but later I decided to actually make a couple freezer meals to give as gifts. It’s the perfect thing for people like my grandparent who can’t or don’t like to leave the house in the winter. Since I live too far away to cook dinner for them, the next best thing would be a deliciously prepared meal they can simply thaw and pop in the crock pot or oven with little to no additional prep work.

Very easy - add the ingredients and squish to mix!
Very easy – add the ingredients and squish to mix!

During the workshop I attended we made 10 freezer meals so I picked some of my favorite recipes and mixed up the bags. Then I found some free printable recipe cards, enlarged them so it will be easier for my grandparents to read, and typed up the simple instructions. I still wanted them to have something to open so I wrapped up personalized kitchen chart to keep with the kitchen/food theme, and added a little note to check their freezer for the rest of the gift.

There are lots of additional items you could give with a freezer meal:

  • Baking sheet
  • Glass baking pan (see my post on how I used Etching Cream to personalize a glass item.)
  • Hot Pads
  • Oven Mitts
  • Kitchen Towels
  • Meat Thermometer
  • Kitchen Chart
  • Crock Pot

Here are the two recipes I selected for this project:

Country Baked Meatloaf Steaks

Country Baked Meatloaf Steaks

Bag 1 (Gallon Size)
2 lbs lean ground beef
3/4 cup Wildtree Just Like Mom’s Meatloaf
1 TBS Wildtree Scampi Blend
1/2 cup Honey Dijon Dressing
1/4 cup soy sauce

Bag #2 (Quart Size)
1 TBS Wildtree Scampi Blend
1 1/2 Cup Panko Break Crumbs (Japanese bread crumbs)

Need at cooking time
2 Eggs

MAKE YOUR FREEZER BAG: Mix all ingredients into bags as noted above. Remove air and seal. Freeze.

TO PREPARE MEAL: Defrost bag in fridge before cooking. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour meat mixture (Bag #1) into a large bowl, add 2 slightly beaten eggs and mix well. Pour bread crumb mixture (Bag #2) onto a plate. Form meat mixture into burger size patties. Place burger patty on break crumbs to coat, flip and coat the other side. Place patties onto a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, turn patties, bake for another 15 minutes or until done*. Cook time will depend on patty thickness.

NOTE: This made a fairly big batch of patties when I made it for my family so after mixing up the bags I split them into two more bags so my grandparents would have two separate meals out of them. Plus I think there’s still enough for leftovers in each bag.

*If you can never remember what the internal temperatures should be when cooking meat you should check out my removable/re-positionable kitchen charts. Simply stick it to the inside of your cupboard and refer to it as necessary. The larger versions have room to write your own notes.

Italian Stuffed Pork Tenderloins

Italian Stuffed Pork Tenderloin

Bag #1 (Gallon Size)
1 Pkg Boneless Pork Tenderloins (approximately 2-2.5 lbs) – “butterfly cut” by making 1″ deep cut down the length of each, do not cut all the way through
2 TBS Wiltree Basil Pesto Grapeseed Oil
1 TBSP Wildtree Tuscany Bread Dipper
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper

Bag #2 (Gallon Size)
1 onion, diced
1 TBS Wildtree Basil Pesto Grapeseed Oil
2 TBSP Wildtree Scampi Blend
2 tsp Wildtree Garlic & Herb Blend
3 TBS chopped sun dried tomatoes
1/2 cup feta cheese crumbles

Need at cooking time
1 cup fresh baby spinach leaves

MAKE YOUR FREEZER BAG: Mix all ingredients into bags as noted above. Remove air and seal. Freeze.

TO PREPARE MEAL: Defrost bags in refrigerator. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Add the baby spinach to Bag #2 and mix well. Spray 9×13 pan with cooking spray. Spoon the mixture from Bag #2 into the the center cut of the tenderloins. Secure with toothpicks or baking string. Place in baking dish and put into the oven for 30 minutes or until meat is done. (Or, if you’re a big crock pot fan like me, put them in the crock pot on low until done.)

NOTE: This was enough to make two meals so once again I split the recipe into multiple bags. I used chopped frozen baby spinach (which I thawed and squeeze dried) because that’s what I had on hand, and I pre-stuffed the loins so it was even less work for the recipients.

* * * *

I am a huge fan of these freezer meal workshops now since I’m always pressed for time, never know what to make, and don’t like taking the time required to try recipes with more than like 5 ingredients. Now I simply spend a few hours shopping and prepping bags, then we have lots of yummy meals from which to choose!

If you have any favorite freezer meal recipes or favorite “good for anyone” gift ideas please share in the comments!

Christmas Canvas with Vinyl Decals & Glitter Mod Podge

December 1, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Are you a glass half empty, or half full kind of person? Depending on your answer, you may find this post to be extremely late, or a little early. Your choice. I remembered this project when I was working on another canvas project.

Last year I ran across the following saying (probably on Pinterest, but I can’t remember) and immediately I thought of my sister-in-law:

Even though she was a grown woman, she believed in elves & Santa Claus & flying reindeer & sacks with endless capacity for toys. Furthermore, she believed that believing in these things was the chief reason that she had more fun in life than everyone else.

If you know Rachel, I think you’d agree; Christmas is to her what Halloween is to me.

Since she loves handmade gifts from me, (she really does, she told me so!) I wrote down the quote and planned to incorporate it with one of her Christmas gifts. This is what I came up with:

Christmas Canvas

Isn’t it fun? Terrible photo, I do apologize, but that baby sparkles like Edward Cullen.

Can you see the gorgeous glitter??

Christmas Canvas - Glitter Mod Podge

I thought it was pretty cute, but let me tell ya, it was a PITA to make. You know PITA, right?

No?

Lesson for the day: PITA = Pain In The @$$.

Yep. For some reason I don’t have very good luck with vinyl and canvas. But I keep trying. This one took FOREVER to get everything on there, and despite a layer or two of glitter Mod Podge over top, a few pieces were still popping up. Maybe nobody else noticed. But I notice everything.

Christmas Canvas - Close Up

Do you love it? Then stick around, I’ll soon be sharing another canvas project with a twist, and a freebie!
